Do you lock your doors?

Chances are you do, but there are a sizable portion of Americans who do not. According to a poll from HuffPost and YouGov, about 7% of Americans leave their door unlocked when they leave home. The estimated U.S. population was approximately 326 million in 2017 (census.gov), which means there may have been roughly 22.8 million Americans who didn’t like to lock their doors behind them!

Numerous factors such as how old you are, where you live and whether you’re a man or a woman may influence your locking preference. The article also suggests how you were raised may also play a role, that if people around you locked the door then you probably picked up that habit as well. What’s the breakdown of these millions of Americans? Here’s the short version:

• People 65 and older are more likely to keep their doors unlocked than younger people
• People living in rural areas are more likely to keep the doors unlocked than city, suburban, and town residents
• People from the Midwest are more likely than other regions to not lock up
• White Americans are more likely to stay unlocked than African-Americans
• Republicans are more likely to stay unlocked than Democrats
• Men are more likely to stay unlocked than women
