A smart card functions essentially like a prox card, and is more advanced because of the ability for the card to store information, and exchange that information through mutual authentication. Mutual authentication is a process which is highly secure. It ensures communication between the reader and the credential is unique, and cannot be compromised. As an intelligent chip card with an embedded microchip that can be loaded with money or data, Smart Cards are used for telephone calling, electronic cash payments, meal programs, transit, and other applications, and then periodically refreshed for additional use. The chips are able to store and maintain data. You’ll find smart cards used widely in Government settings, institutional environments, and healthcare and finanical applications because of the sophisticated security features of the cards, enabling them to meet the security measures required for transmitting important data or financial information.
